Renault has once again made a name for itself in F1 history by securing both the Constructor's and Driver's championship! I'm ecstatic right now! A well deserved win for a team who has been consistent yet aggressive throughout the season.
I've been a loyal Renault fan ever since they bought over the old Benetton team. What won me over was the departure of the legendary Mika Hakkinen from Mc Laren and a compelling performance of the new Renault-Benetton team just after two races. Back then, they were the underdogs, no one would have imagined them being world champions. But in the hands of the brilliant Flavio Briatore (who I must say has a rather interesting life, read), they advanced in leaps and bounds. Briatore was the genius who replaced the then and still overrated Button with current world champion, Alonso. A brilliant and unorthodox move that was then greatly criticized.
The end of the 2006 season is filled with history making events. Schuey finally retires after his 248th F1 race and 7 Driver's championship. Arguably the most aggressive driver in F1 history and renowned for his "dirty" tactics and "will do anything to win" attitude; he leaves the sport as a legend. A hero in the eyes of many (not mine) a dirty player in the eyes of some (indeed). The commentator on 8TV made this comment at the end of the 2006 Brazilian race "If only I could trade 10 of Schuey's wins and 1 Driver's Championship for all the stunts that he has pulled, Schumacher would undeniably be a hero".
The 2007 season holds great promise for Mc Laren with Alonso at the helm of their ship. Giancarlo Ficichella and Heikki Kovalainen (current Renault test driver) take over and fingers crossed, will continue Renault's winning streak! I'm banking Heikki to be the new Hakinnen seeing that he too is a Fin. In all hopes, he will bring the challenge to Alonso and the season will be full of brilliant, fierce and vibrant competition! On the other hand, I'm doubtful of Fisi, he just isn't consistent enough to cut it as a worthy driver in my books.
a great mystery awaits the 2007 season, and if it’s
anything like this season, 2007 promises to be an unbelievably exciting
affair.
